親御さんの意見として、英会話のレッスンでは遊びを全てなくして英単語を早く多く詰め込んで欲しいという希望があると思います。私も、子供の成長過程を知るまではそう考えていました。でも、子供達の遊びの中の深い集中力を知ってからは、この集中力に勝るものはない！と思うようになりました。
話は少し変わりますが、あそび道具、あそび場を提供しているボーネルンド社の考え方がとても好きです。心に刺さったボーネルンド社の言葉を紹介します。”子どもにとって、あそびは生活のすべてです。” 、”夢中になって遊んだ豊かな経験が、大きくなった時に、自分の好きなことを見つけだし自分のしたいという意志に基づいて行動することができる人を育んでいきます。”
実際のレッスンの中で子供達が夢中になって英語に取り組む姿を見ていると、講師の私が感動のあまり泣きそうになる事がよくあります。深い集中力で大人の想像を軽々と超えた学びの経験を積んでいます。親御さんにその場で見せれないのがとても残念です。
自主性・半自主性を持って深い集中に入る体験を、多く積んでいってくれたらと思っています。少し大袈裟ですが、その体験が将来役に立つ日がくると信じています。

Children’s deep concentration and play
Based on my research, I have realized that parents want English teachers to cut out all the play and have their children quickly memorize lots of English words instead. I used to have the same idea. However, after learning about the mental and physical development of children, I came to believe that nothing is better than for children to be deeply focused when learning a new language.
I really like the corporate philosophy of Bornelund Inc., which provides play equipment and playgrounds in Japan. To quote the company: “Playing is everything in a child’s life. It is a rich experience that helps them find out what they like and to act based on what they want to do.” I totally agree with these ideas, nowadays.
After incorporating play in our lessons, I noticed how the children were engrossed in learning English during my class. I am often moved by this.
Through deep concentration, they learn in such a way that easily exceeds the expectation of teachers or parents. If I had the chance, I’d share these scenes with doubting parents.
I hope that many children will experience the feeling of deep concentration and experience independence. I believe that this experience will provide a great source of energy for such children in the future.
